TWENTY-six riders and 50 ponies from Ireland leave for the pony international show in Fontainebleau next weekend. The highlight of the week will be the Nations' Cup, which takes place on Friday next (April 17).
The Irish team for the Nations Cup will be selected from the five combinations below:
- Hayley Dunne with Kiltormer Grey (Team), Frere Jacque and Branchfield Heather (6 year old)
- Shannon Mackenzie with Dollar Girl (Team) and Bundy
- Neil Maguire with Cappagh Coach (Team)
- Eoin McMahon with Sandstorm Tiger (Team), Attyrory Gold Star and Moyralla Exchange Lad (7 year old)
- Emily Turkington with Sambo Lino (Team), He’s No Joker and Dr. Spot (7 year old)
Fifteen other riders will compete in other international classes at the show while seven other riders will get the opportunity to compete in the young pony classes. The full list of the other riders travelling is detailed below. The team and other pony and rider combinations to travel were selected following two qualification days during March. The combinations were selected based on their placings in the trial competition. All successful combinations then attended a specific training day in Broadmeadows Equestrian Centre last weekend.
Horse Sport Ireland’s Pony High Performance Coach Ian Fearon said that he was very pleased with the jumping at the trials and during the training day. “As ever we have tremendously talented riders and some excellent ponies. While we want to have success in Fontainebleau many of the riders will be travelling to compete internationally for the first time and the experience will really stand to them,” he said. Ian also acknowledged the contribution of Horse Sport Ireland High Performance Co-ordinator Heather Coyle and Show Jumping Ireland’s Katy Saunders who will also travel with the team, as well as Susann Killilea in Horse Sport Ireland.
“We had over 100 ponies and riders who went to the trials and they took a lot of organising as have the preparations for getting there. A lot of work has gone in and I want to thank Heather, Katy and Susann,” he said.
